Franklin has traveled and taught workshops in Portugal,
Italy, Spain, Mexico, England, Hawaii, France, and now
Guatemala. Between painting and exhibitions, she has authored
several books and been featured in many articles in national
art publications and is a highly sought after art show
juror. Amazingly, in addition to all this, and her many
workshops throughout the United States, she makes time
to instruct weekly local classes.
Kaye began her art career in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
Four years later, in 1979, she began a serious quest
for the best art schools and instructors. She studied
at the Scottsdale Artist School and with Connecticut
artist William Henry Earle. Kaye’s pursuit of
excellence has won her the deepest respect of her students,
peers, and serious collectors. She has received many
national awards and honors that have culminated in her
recognition as master pastelist, and her election to
signature membership in the Pastel Society of America
and Oil Painters of America. She is also a Signature
Member of the Au Premier Coup Society.
The elements in her artwork consist of light, color,
and focal point. She likes working with both pastels
and oils. Pastels show immediate results and they stay
brilliant, oils allow you to create new colors from
existing pigments.

“When I think of Guatemala
I think of vivid color. I think of the beautiful smiling
people in their multi-colored hupiles. I think of amazing
flowers and fruit from the jungles, the abundant markets
overflowing with crafts, and how there is nothing comparable
to painting in Guatemala.” William
Hewson offers his students thrilling color work
and leads them away from the analytical into abstraction,
to see shapes. “When we are able to free ourselves
of preconceived images we can truly see the beauty of
the world.” He begins with contour drawing as
a map for painting, followed by a direct painting approach
that avoids washes and creates direct, dramatic color
passages. “I do a lot of my mixing on the paper
and let the accidental quality of watercolor take over.
It’s a great practice in surrendering control”.
William has been painting and teaching for fifteen
years in the Pacific Northwest, nationally, and internationally.
He has studied in Paris and Stockholm, as well as The
University of Houston. His diversity of work includes
portraiture, still life, and landscape. He’d love
to travel with you to Guatemala for a painterly immersion
into color.

Susan Lewis lives
in Rockport, Texas. She called to ask if she could put a group together that was
“non-artist group”. We do several groups each year that are not art
workshops but do not put them up on our web-site. We are making an exception in
this case. Why? Because it is time that everybody knows that we just do a really
great “travel experience”. Not only do our artists think they have
been to heaven, but our non-artist travelers are absolutely “blown away”
by the trips they have had. Anita and I (John) have been doing these trips for
over three years now and given our experience and connection to Guatemala, and
our commitment to making our trips “over the top”, we are happy to
begin publicly offering this magical travel experience to non-artists also (families,
groups of friends, travel clubs, bridge players, birders, garden clubs, etc.)
Accompanying Susan's group.....Anita Rogers lived in Guatemala for
25 years, speaks Spanish, and was a collector of Maya weavings and Spanish Colonial
antiques. She has been around the travel industry most of her life, as her family
owns the beautiful Hotel Atitlán on Lake Atitlán in the Guatemala
highlands. John Korte has traveled to Guatemala for the past 20 years. They understand
local customs and business practices. They stay in the hotels, eat in the restaurants,
and ride the transportation, personally experiencing every aspect of their workshop/tours.
They know the “hidden treasures' as well as the little bits of information
only the locals know. Their experience, relationships, and knowledge of the country
allow them to provide a worry-free, life enriching travel adventure.
When asked why she wanted to put a group together to go to Guatemala, Susan
said: “I have always wanted to go to Guatemala.....my now 89 year old
mother taught school in Guatemala City for several years when she was in her 20's
and she has always talked about it (I have some textiles from her time there).
I have traveled with all of the girls signed up so far, mostly on shopping trips
to the interior of Mexico (San Miguel, Guadalajara, Puebla, etc)....no I am
not bilingual, but at least 3 in this group are. My friends love adventure and
cultural experiences (we are very excited about All Saints Day) and most of them
all know each other. I am glad you will be with us”! There are only a few
spaces left. Come join Susan and her “girls” if you “just want
to go”!

Marki Rowe
has traveled extensively throughout Mexico and Guatemala.
Guatemala is her favorite as it is the most vibrant and
exciting. She fell in love with the rich colors, the folk
art, and the textiles that are still hand woven and worn
by most of the Mayan population today. The Spanish influence
on architecture and design, blended with many other cultures
offers up a landscape that she has found delightful.
Marki exported many weavings and textiles she purchased
directly from the Maya for her retail store in Rockport,
Texas after her first trip to Guatemala. The décor
of her home is predominately influenced by the vibrant
colors seen throughout the country and the folk art
and weavings she has collected. She now resides in Corpus
Christi, Texas where she is employed by a non-profit
organization working with at risk families to prevent
child abuse and neglect.

Tony van Hasselt’s ability to graphically explain
problems and solutions as they arise during a demonstration,
combined with his energetic and enthusiastic teaching
style, have made him a highly popular and sought after
instructor, appreciated for his empathy with student
struggles. He "has been there", has gone through
the same frustrations and tries not to forget those
normal stages in one's artistic development.
As an elected member of the American Watercolor Society,
van Hasselt's paintings have graced the covers of the
Artist's Magazine and Watercolor Magic. He has been
featured in Southwest Art, American Artist, Australian
Artist, and other publications. Tony first wrote “A
Studio Visit”, followed by “Outdoor Watercolor
Workshop”. He is the co-author of “Painting
with the White of Your Paper” as well as “The
Watercolor Fix-It Book”, featuring his renowned
visual reminder system “The Building Blocks of
Painting”, which is taught on all his workshops.
He has made several popular instructional videos and
his work is included in nine other art instruction books. |

Designer, teacher, watercolor
artist, rancher and inventor, Gayle
Weisfield could easily be described as the “Renaissance
Woman” of the Columbia River Gorge.
- She has designed houses, restaurants, theaters,
menus, and graphics.
- Gayle teaches her watercolor techniques at workshops
in Hawaii, San Miguel, Mexico, Cannon Beach, Oregon,
the California coast, The Dalles Art Center in Oregon,
and soon will instruct in beautiful Guatemala, Central
America.
- She is a realistic landscape artist who captures
the feel of the northwest landscape with a fresh,
direct, bold wet in wet technique. Strong design and
negative value patterns are her trademark.
- Born in Ogden Utah, Gayle moved with her family
to Lyle, Washington in the 60’s. Growing up
on a ranch overlooking Mt. Hood and the Columbia River
Gorge, she developed a deep love for country life,
and the beautiful scenery of the area. She now lives
on and is resurrecting the family ranch.
- Inventor of the BogaBoard™ Watercolor Paper
Stretcher, a revolutionary way to prepare paper for
watercolor. Gayle wanted a stretcher board that was
easy to use, would save time, and would eliminate
the aggravation associated with most other techniques.
She wanted it to be a pleasure, not a chore, to stretch
paper. So, she had to create it herself.
A student of life, Gayle attended the University of
Washington and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
She spent the next year touring Europe on a motor scooter.
There, she continued to paint while having an opportunity
to study the art and architecture of the great masters. |
